The Memoral Archway

    The Memoral Archway with the insciptions of"The Source of the Chinese Classics",is a commemorative building of Confucius for his great contribution to Chinese culture.The present one was first The Memoral Archway

building during the reign of Wanli Emperor of Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1586), which ,being made of wood, was burnt down in a war during the period of Xianfeng Emperor. In 1869, Tongzhi Emperor had it rebuilt, the inscriptions on which were by Duanmu Cai, a famous calligrapher from Jiangning Country.
    To the east and west of the archway and at the entrance of the square stood two gateways, on one of which was inscribed with the words "His Grance Equals the Bounties Best to wed by Heaven and Earth" ,while on the other with" His Datrine Privails through ages both Ancient and Mordern".
    However, both the archway and the gateways were removed because of structural decay yeas later. The present ones were erected in 1988 by the people's Government of Qinhuai River District with the archway a little to the south of its original location.
